New Site… FacebookExport.com – Export your Facebook data

Yesterday I was inspired after reading this post on techcrunch. So inspired in fact, that I dropped all dev on my current project (http://snipt.org) and began hacking away at a new one, a tool that would allow you to export your Facebook data. Less than 24hrs later, its done.

FacebookExport.com is a simple tool that exports the majority of your Facebook data to an XML file. My hope is that other sites will create parsers that allow you to import the data into other services like wordpress, posterous, flickr, etc. I’m calling the format “FBE”, short for “FaceBook Export”. I’m not sure how long the tool will be live so hurry and reclaim your data while you still can!

Here is a small sample of  my personal profile exported, as you can see by the scrollbar on the right, there is a TON of data not shown in this image, but its all there in the export file.

That’s all for now, more later!

It's not really working for me. The first times I did it, I got the general profile info (name, age, etc.) and the last time I tried it, I got nothing. Does it need any particular privacy setup to work?

Hey sorry you're having trouble JS but I'm happy to help. What browser are you using?

Try clearing your cookies, closing your browser and then retrying the login/export process. I made some updates that might fix the problem you're experiencing. Let me know how it goes.

    Anyone else having issues?

  • JS

Still playing with it. It's the form that's the problem for me. I can't toggle the checkboxes at all, except by using the select all and deselect all links, and coincidentally the only thing that ends up exported is the item that you autoselected, the <profile> stuff. What I got looks great though.

I'm on Firefox 3.6.3. Installing Konqueror now.

  • JS

I'm guessing the problem is in your checkbox jquery. “checked=” isn't properly boolean, it's just says whether the default condition of the checkbox is checked or not, and any value (“=true”, “=false”, or “=dragontongue”) will check it.

I'm still not sure, but it's definitely a ui problem.

Thanks for helpin weed through this. I just updated the site again, the UI logic is fixed you should be able to toggle the checkboxes correctly now- let me know if that solved your problem.

    Thanks!

  • JS

Checkboxes are fixed. I can still only get the <profile>, but none of the links, notes, or other good stuff.

That is very odd, no one else has reported these types of issues…. My suggestion would be remove the app from your facebook profile (Account -> Application Settings) and then logout and try the entire process again. It will prompt you to add the app and allow it a subset of permissions, just go through the motion and see if that works.

If other people were having similar issues it would be easier to diagnose but so far you are the only person who has had problems (and I have had several friends try across a spectrum of browsers and OS's)

Let me know how it goes, sorry for the difficulty!

I have the same problem. I could export all the data somehow but after that when I try to export only part of the data it exports only my personal info but not my friends info as I wanted.

  • JS

I just did that, but I got the same result. Heisenbug? The reason that I suspected that it was a UI problem is because the only section that you autoselected for the user is the only section that consistently comes through. Could you just whip it up as a straight, no jquery, html form (facebookexport light?) so that I, paucku, and the nameless lurkers can see if it works for us?

Thanks for all of the replies. I'd like to see this work for me, because it's something that people I know want.

Just got it to work using my N900, and the results are fantastic. I still have no idea why my main laptop (firefox on ubuntu) hates the site, but it may be the fault of an errant extension or something. Great job, and thank you.

  • http://thedanosphere.com Dan

    Hey JS,

Glad to see you got it working! Thats so weird that it doesn't work on your main laptop… maybe its something with ubuntu… or maybe its how im passing the selected exports on to the xml page. I am going to try to pass the vars using a different method which may fix the issues (the preselected one is hard coded, thats why it works everytime).

I am working on getting the photo exporter completed this weekend and then ill circle back and implement the variable-passing using a different method.

Just want to thank you guys for your help troubleshooting this, I know it can be frustrating but I'm just 1 dude doing this after I get off my dayjob so I have very limited testing resources at my disposal, but with your help I will get the exports working for as many people/platforms as possible :)

Sit tight for now, Ill roll the photo exporter out this weekend (fingers crossed!) and then update the main data export stuff to hopefully get it workin for everyone. Thanks again! Stay tuned, Ill post updates as they are ready.

    hi
thanks very much for creating this .. it is great.

But I have a little problem
it works only partially and does not export all the old postings on the wall..  only works upto posts that are about 6 months old.

I would like to have a back up of my entire wall right from when I started my profile three years ago.

    hope you can fix this
    ciao
