Social Networking Sites – Speed Test

I use alot of social networking sites, and most of them load pretty fast. I decided to run a little test to see which sites loaded the fastest (this is a gotta-have-it-now culture right?). The results are pretty interesting, here they are, with the screen captures of the full tests.

I performed these tests on a weekday around 4:40pm- I figured that’s when everyone would be browsing the web while awaiting the end of the day.

Summary:

Fastest: Linkedin.com

Slowest: Digg.com

Google.com – 0.7s – Control
Linkedin.com – 2.7s
Myspace.com – 2.8s
Facebook.com – 4.6s
Reddit.com – 4.6s
Stumbleupon.com – 6.1s
Twitter.com – 11.5s
Digg.com – 12s

    I find this to be very interesting data for you to have test the loading time/speed of different social networks. Often times I think that some sites load slowly because of the many people that are logged in and as well as what is on the page (such as the various postings and pictures, artwork on MySpace).

    Yeah I tried to run the test at a time when all the networks would probably be experiencing some traffic load (440pm). Some of it has to do with the # of users hitting the sites and the amount of bandwidth those sites have available to serve up the pages. But I also think alot of it has to do with how well the scripting is done – for example facebook has a ton of effects and generally tends to run pretty fast, whereas digg doesnt even have that many effects (or images, or pieces of data) and it loads muuuch slower than facebook. Keep in mind this could also just be because they have fewer servers than FB… :shrug:

    Ah. Interesting to know. I looked at the graphics and just understood the general load up time for the entire site and looked in confusing with the rest of the charts. Nevertheless, it is interesting to know something outside the range of my computer skills. Not everyone will pay attention to small pieces of information as you have posted, but overall we know that websites to sort of go crazy when there is a lot of traffic.
